ESL, Second Session Outline

Evaluating Sources and Compiling Annotated Bibliographies

Instructor: Megan Metcalf

Course Guide: http://guides.library.uwm.edu/annotatedbib

  • Introductory Video to Annotated Bibliography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffN96B5-IJI
  1. Annotated Bibliography: Show Sample Annotated Bib on LibGuide. You list your citation, and then provide a summary in your own words.
  2. Search ASC for “public housing and America”. Limit peer reviewed. Choose 3. Evaluate it for relevancy by using the abstract (summary). Click export to refworks. Move on to refworks.
  3. RefWorks can help you: Create New Folder and name it Annotated Bib. Select three sources and put them in the folder. Download into a word document.
  4. BEAM. Pull up article. Pass out BEAM Handouts. You are going to be evaluating and critically analyzing these sources. At first glance all academic articles might look the same, but they do in fact have different components. Let’s take a look at the BEAM framework to start talking about ways you might analyze articles to provide you with information you might use in your bibliographies.

Examples of questions I posed to the class for discussion:

When you are evaluating an article ask yourself…How would I use this in my paper? (What kind of information would I be getting) or, how would another author use this in their writing? You have to summarize, so you must be careful not to plagiarize. How can you talk about an article without just using direct quotes? Well, you can start by analyzing the different aspects of the paper. What type of information is present? How did they reach these conclusions?
