ESL Outline, Introduction to the UWM Libraries

Introduction & Welcome to the UWM Libraries.


Who I am: A librarian in the Research and Instructional Support Department- This means that it is my job to help you succeed in your research. If you are having problems with your research at any stage (finding articles, brainstorming keywords, determining source credibility etc.) please reach out to me (point out e-mail on board) or other librarians. We love to help!


What we will cover: Introduction to the library resources available to you as UWM students, and how to effectively use them for research at the UWM libraries (finding books and articles). We will then have time for independent research. And, finally a library tour (optional).


Why this content is meaningful for you:

  • Finding better research can translate to better grades, and so on.
  • (Point out e-mail/course guide on the board and encourage them to write it down or take a picture with their device).


II. Where to Get Help in the Library 


Does anybody know where to go to get help in the library? Ask the Class: If you needed to get (physical/virtual) help in the library, where do you think you would go?
  • (Demonstrate the different help points while discussing)
    -Welcome Desk/Circulation
    -Libraries Homepage (About the Libraries List)
    -Research Help at AALD (Ask A Librarian Desk)
    -AALD Chat Box/Live Help Link
    -Research Consultations/E-mail Librarian
    -Course Guides (Show International Course Guide- Highlight Library Terminology Glossary, Navigate from Library Resources Tab to show options for finding Books, Articles, etc)


III. Research 
  • What topics are you researching right now? Write on board or, if they don’t feel like sharing, choose your own topic and do a round-robin/group work keyword exercise. (Free Form Brainstorm Keywords, Synonyms, Main Concepts, Search Queries)
  • How to Find Books: (Have you used search @ UW? What was confusing? Do you know how to request items that we don’t own? (Optional demo based on response). Time permitting, give students a few minutes to practice finding books relevant to their individual research topics.
    -Finding Articles. Where do we go to find scholarly/peer reviewed articles? Google Scholar, Resources by Subject. (Demo) How do we know which database to use? What search terms? Who can help us if we get stuck?
    Time permitting, give students a few minutes to practice finding articles relevant to their individual research topics. Walk around and offer help.


**If there is no tour**:
A. Add RefWorks Segment
B. Spend remaining time on independent research, walking around and offering assistance to each student

LIBRARY TOUR
Several students expressed anxiety about knowing where they were allowed to be in the library. Really emphasize that as students, they are not only allowed, but encouraged to “be” in these places. These places exist for them to use. 

• Throughout the tour point out Live Help Areas/Study Spots
• Point out instructional classrooms, class schedules are on the door. Don’t be afraid to use the labs- its open study most of the time. 
Stop by UITS (Tech Help) Ask them what they do. Computers are equipped with lots of software- questions regarding that and tutorials can be found online or at this desk.
– Stop at the Ask a Librarian Desk. Ask them what they do. The desk is staffed ___. Hours can be found on libraries homepage. Encourage students to stop by.
– Printing/Print cards/Scanning Stations. Welcome Desk-maps/directions.
– Show Group Rooms, Talk about reservation system. Show on phone. Ask students to practice if they want. Can reserve immediately or up to two weeks in advance.
– Second Floor- Show stacks- Talk about Archives. Walk to Curriculum/Music. These areas have librarians and staff members available. Quiet study.
– Third Floor- AGSL- Maps/Globes/Local. Geography. GIS. Rare documents.
– Fourth Floor- Special Collections
– Lower Level- Media and reserve library- equipment checkout/dvds.

(Optional: We walked over to the East Wing to point out tutoring and the Writing Center. We stopped by the PASS desk and asked them to tell us a little about tutoring, and the students asked a lot of questions).
