LGBTQ+ Bibliographies

I talk a lot about LGBTQ+ bibliography. Many of these way finding resources were self-published and therefore, are only available at a limited number of libraries. These obscure volumes are not easily discovered online, so I thought I would do my part by keeping a running list of these resources as I find them.  I have discovered so many incredible items by using these bibliographies, and I would encourage you to do the same! Since many of these titles are older, they also point to older titles that have not often been ingested into online catalogs, and therefore, are not easily discoverable by search engines or more formal search infrastructures.
  • Checklist 1960. Gene Damon and Marion Zimmer Bradley. This was the bibliography that started my obsession. Mimeographed and compiled with care by some mad, mad bookworms. Do yourself a favor and discover some new titles with this baby!
  • Homosexuality: A Select Bibliography, Compiled by Librarians Umesh D. Sharma and Wilfrid C. Rudy. (Waterloo, Ontario, 1970). "An attempt has been made in this bibliography to select books and periodical articles concerned with all aspects of both male and female homosexuality: biological, psychiatric, sociological, religious, legal, etc. The bulk of this material is of a scholarly nature and also includes some novels and other literary works. The bibliography is limited to works in English or in English translation....(and) includes over 2,000 entries."
  • The Lesbian Periodicals Index, Compiled and Edited by Clare Potter. I use this index all the time! One of my favorites for sure. Come for the index of lesbian materials, stay for the sweet and informative introduction written by Joan Nestle and Deborah Edel. Published by The Naiad Press (Rest in power Barbara Grier!), 1986.
  • Sexual Minorities: Serial Sources of Information on Male Homosexuals, Lesbians, Transvestites and Transexuals held by the Labadie Collection of Protest Literature. Compiled by E.F. SantaVicca. October 1975, Ann Arbor, Michigan. One asterisk indicates lesbian, two asterisk indicate transvestite, and three asterick indicate transexual materials. This limits materials to those in a specific collection, but still, I found a number of resources I had not heard of before. A nice selection of foreign language and titles from the UK.
